When deciding to welcome a fancy rat into your home, one of the first questions is which variety suits you best. Fancy rats come in many shapes, sizes, colors, and personalities, and choosing the right one can make a big difference in your experience as a rat owner. This guide will help you understand the different fancy rat varieties and how to match them with your lifestyle, preferences, and expectations.
Understanding Fancy Rat Varieties
Fancy rats are domesticated rats bred for companionship. Over time, breeders have developed many varieties based on coat type, color and markings. Knowing the main categories helps you narrow down your choices.
Coat Types
This list does not include all varieties.
Standard Coat
The most common variety, standard coat rats have short, smooth fur. They are easy to care for and tend to have a classic rat appearance.
Satin Coat
Satin rats have a shiny, silky coat that reflects light beautifully and are very soft and smooth.
Hairless
Hairless rats lack fur entirely or have very sparse hair. They require special attention to temperature and skin.
Rex Coat
Rex rats have curly or wavy fur, including whiskers and eyelashes. Their unique texture makes them stand out, and their coats tend to be more course.
Double Rex
These rats are often hairless or have patches or fur. They combine traits of rex and hairless varieties and as a result they may need more warmth and extra skin care. Same care as the Hairless varieties.
Velveteen
Velveteen have a thicker more plush coat that can have curls or waves. They are softer then the Rex varieties.
Harley
This variety has a much longer coat with no undercoat and tends to have skin issues and may need a special diet.
Silvermane/D'Argent
This coat type is stunning, slightly longer then a standard coat and very soft. It has a colored base with translucent or hollow hair shafts that reflect light, creating a shimmering, frosted appearance over the body and a distinct darker mask of color on the muzzle. (One of my favorite varieties)
Other Varieties:
Dumbo
This variety is not a coat variety but rather a variety that can be distinguished by it's ears. Contrary to popular belief they are no different in temperament, health and size then any other variety. The Dumbo ears do create a very sweet face but breeding (Genetics), socialization and environment are what contribute to all of the above.
Manx
This variety has no tail and as such many breeders consider them unethical to breed for, however they are adorable but could come with many issues. If you choose this variety make sure you go to a breeder that knows what they are doing and make sure there are no issues such as but not limited to - Spinal Issues & Hind Leg Issues. (I myself have one Manx as a pet and I adore him.)
Colors and Markings
Fancy rats come in a wide range of colors, including black, white, agouti (brownish), blue, and more. Markings can be solid, hooded (color on the head and shoulders), capped (color on the head only), or variegated patterns.
Matching Rat Varieties to Your Lifestyle
Choosing a fancy rat variety depends on your daily routine, living environment, and what you want from your pet.
For First-Time Rat Owners
If you are new to rats, all varieties are generally great , however I wouldn't choose Hairless and Harley rats until your more familiar with rat care. All rat varieties can be social & gentle, depending on where you get them and how much time you spend with them.
For Allergy-Sensitive Owners
People with mild allergies might find hairless rats or rex rats easier to tolerate because they shed less dander. However, hairless rats need warmer environments and extra skin care, so consider if you can meet those needs.
Grooming
Most rats do not need to be groomed or bathed. Older rats might need help or sick rats but other then that most tend to do just fine on their own. However some rats love to be brushed during cuddle time.
For Families with Children
All varieties are generally great for families, however if you are new to rats I wouldn't choose Hairless and Harley rats until your more familiar with rat care. All rat varieties can be social & gentle, depending on where you get them and how much time you spend with them. Teaching children how to handle rats carefully will ensure a positive experience.
For Experienced Rat Keepers
If you have cared for rats before and want something different, consider Harley, double rex or hairless rats. These varieties can be very rewarding pets for those who understand their needs.
Personality Differences Among Varieties
Personality varies more by individual than by variety, some traits are common:
All rat varieties can be curious and outgoing.
All rat varieties can be playful and affectionate.
Spending time doing some research will help you decide which variety is best for you.
Housing and Care Considerations
All varieties have the same care needs:
Exceptions -
Hairless and double rex rats might need warmer cages and softer bedding to protect their skin as well as routine skin care.
Harleys might need a special diet.
Where to Find Your Fancy Rat
Look for reputable breeders . Avoid pet stores where rats may not be bred for temperament or health.
Final Thoughts on Choosing Your Fancy Rat
Choosing the right fancy rat variety means balancing your lifestyle with the rat’s needs. Remember that every rat has its own personality, and spending time with your new pet will help you build a strong bond.
If you are ready to bring a fancy rat into your life, consider your daily routine, home environment, and how much time you can dedicate to care and interaction. This will guide you to the perfect variety that fits your lifestyle and ensures a happy, healthy pet.
